Translate a subtitle file
Choose an .srt or .vtt file, pick a language and download the translated file. Timestamps, cue numbers and styling lines are kept exactly as they were; only the words change.
Your file is read in your browser. Its text is sent from your browser to Google's free translator and nowhere else; VidDub never receives it.
Rather hear it than read it?
VidDub is a Chrome extension that translates the subtitles of the video you are watching and speaks them in your language, in sync with the picture. It works on many video sites and on video files on your own computer.
Add VidDub to Chrome — freeQuestions
- Is it really free?
- Yes. There is no account to create and nothing to pay. If Google’s free translator is busy, the page tells you to wait a minute and try again.
- Will the timing still match my video?
- Yes. Only the text of each line is replaced. Every start and end time is copied character for character, so the file stays in sync with the same video.
- Which files work?
- SubRip (.srt) and WebVTT (.vtt), in any language. Lines that wrap over two rows are translated as one sentence, which reads better than translating each half alone.
- Can I listen to the translation instead?
- With the VidDub extension, yes: open the video, press the VidDub button, and it speaks the translated subtitles in a natural voice while the original sound is lowered.
